No matter how holy a child of God may be, if he associates with an evil minded person or a group of people with bad character and behavior; he is walking in the shadow of death. They don’t have any good thing to offer than to lead you into error and advice you in an ungodly way. Always wanting others to join their evil way or luring them into believing or follow their destructive way.

The undisputed evil-free association one can think of is that of blood relation; however, it is not always true. Several times it has proved that the nearer the blood, the nearer bloody they are. Therefore, do a thorough scrutiny before associating with anyone.

In the Old Testament, when Judah and Israel is mentioned, we quickly conclude that they are from the same progenitor. In the same vein, every person looks at any building labeled church as a real church of God or the gentle or church goers as a good person. It is also understandable that at certain times in the scripture, the king of Judah and the king of Israel would see themselves as one family. This was exactly what happened when king Jehoshaphat of Judah visited king Ahab of Israel. Besides being of the same root, both were in-laws.

But the difference between the two was that Jehoshaphat worshiped the God of Israel and always seeking instruction from the Lord; while Ahab was an idol worshiper, supported by a wicked wife, Jezebel. Likewise, many Christians see churches as practicing the same Christianity; however, some practiced the right doctrine while some practiced devil’s or mixed doctrine.

On the occasion of this visit, Ahab implored Jehoshaphat to go with him to fight against Ramoth Gilead. As a child of God, Jehoshaphat requested for divine instruction before going to the war. Despite divine warning not to go to the war, Jehoshaphat went with Ahab in order not to disappoint him.

Ahab told Jehoshaphat to dress in royal robe while he will disguise at the war front. In ancient time, the king was always the target of the enemy. The killing of the leader or king of one nation means victory for the opposition.

Ahab in his own wickedness wants Jehoshaphat to be the target of the enemy while he would not be recognized and would escape being hit. This devilish move makes Jehoshaphat vulnerable to be shot by the enemy. If not for divine intervention, Jehoshaphat would have been killed in the war. On the other hand, the reverse was the case; despite his disguise, Ahab was killed in the war.

As a child of God, you must not be ignorant of the device of the wicked ones. Do not allow anyone to push you to do what is contrary to good will in your life. Do not allow sympathy for a person or any association to cause you to sin or because you don’t want to offend someone, you endangered your life. Association with a worthless person can lead one to an untimely death.

However close a person might be to you, blood or distance relation, if his/her character does not portray godly traits or his/her advise is not for good intention; you need to dissociate and distance from such person.

A good associate does not lead the other into error or danger.

Amnon was the first son of David; he had a lust passion love for Tamar, his half sister. It was unlawful for Amnon to marry his half sister according to the Law of Moses, this is called incest (Lev. 18:9, 11;20:17); this lust for his sister had made him obsessive and was loosing weight.

However, Amnon had a friend cousin, Jonadab, who is crafty; he devised a plan to lure Tamar into coming inside Amnon’s bedroom; advising Amnon to pretend to be sick. Amnon persuaded his father, King David to allow Tamar to come to his house to prepare food for him. From there, he overpowered Tamar and raped her; read the rest of the story in 2Sam.13.

Yielding to this evil advice of Jonadab by Amnon was the genesis of evil in the house of David; a destructive course that will lead to his own death, murdered by his half brother, Absalom, the blood brother of Tamar.

A good associate will not advise others to their destruction or to do evil; nor is he a law breaker. A friend or a relative who gives an ungodly advice should be avoided by all means. An associate who cannot protect your interest, especially, who cannot reroute you when you take a destructive course, should be avoided.

Proximity in whatever way is not the determinant yardstick to choose an associate, but good thing you can benefit from one other. As a christian, a good question you need to ask yourself is; will this association (friend, society or church) keep me closer to God or will draw me away from Him? Will the association lead me into error or put me right? Beware of the organization you associate with and beware who your friend is.

This was the reason Apostle Paul was telling us that

“Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? And what agreement has thetemple ofGod with idols? For you are the temple of the living God” (2Cor. 6:14-16).

It can be inferred from the above quotation that,

  1. Jehoshaphat represents a believer of the living God, while Ahab represents a non believer or an idol worshiper.
  2. Jehoshaphat represents righteousness (purposeful person), while Ahab represents lawlessness (purposeless person).
  3. Jehoshaphat represents light, while Ahab represents darkness.
  4. Jehoshaphat represents Christ (Christians), while Ahab represents Belial (worthless person).
  5. Jehoshaphat represents thetempleofGod(Christians), while Ahab represents idol.

Where did your associate fall in the above quotation and explanation? The association of Jehoshaphat with Ahab almost cost him his life; in the other worse scenario, the association of Amnon with Jonadab cost him his life. The consequences of associating with an evil person or congregation never yielded anything good, but retrogression and destruction.

Have a friend like David and Jonathan; though, are very hard to come by; all you need to do is to be divinely wise and conscious of who to associate with.

I am not saying you cannot have a friend, but beware not to compromise with anyone with sinful habit and practices. If you want to be like Christ or His follower, you must maintain integrity like Him. Let your association be with real God’s children; I mean “real” child of God.

The Bible says,

“Do not be deceived: evil company corrupts good habits” (1Cor. 15:33).

The only friend who is truthful, loyal and loving; whose word never leads anyone to their destruction or forsake them when they go astray: He is the truth, the way and life, Jesus Christ: An associate without a doubt.
