The need to walk in truth without removing the ancient landmarks

Let this be in the mind of all Christians that there is no disparity between the Old Testament and the New Testament. Both are very relevant and they form the bedrock for proper Christian living and practices. Therefore, let every Christian be faithful to observe and walk in the biblical landmarks – direct commandments and revelations from God, and the teaching of our Lord Jesus as laid down and practiced during the apostolic era.

We are to be careful about what we hear concerning the word of God; because, what we hear from teacher and preacher of the word can be sweet and hypnotizing the way it is expressed to impress their listeners with their thought. Many of these preachers and teachers are expert in psychology and are good vocalists; however, believers must be sensitive and discern no matter how plausible, popular, pressed or preferred their message. A Christian who reads the Bible daily will be able to do what the scripture says “test all things; and hold fast to what is good” (1Thess. 5:21).

We must be discipline, think rationally and be at alert to spiritual pitfall to prevent anyone from falling into the baits of false ministers of the word. Though, some wear physical or imaginary collars as ministers, many of them are enemies of the gospel because of their divided loyalty.

God’s truth is one of the old things; yet, it remains unchanging in reality. The truth that the world needs is rooted in the word of God, which are written of the old. Though old; still, it is new every day. Any new thing must be an offshoot of the old. Truth will always be truth.

Those that distorted the truth do it not because it is no more the truth; but they called it old because of their sinful selfish motive and expected unrighteous gains: their actions are not of God. Any change that does not stem in the truth of the word of God is wrong.

The scripture states that Demas has forsaken Paul for he loves this present world (2Tim 4:10); this is very true of many ministers and believers today; they have departed from ancient landmarks. However, I will keep pounding on the ministers of the word that they are responsible for the problem that is facing Christianity; and it is their responsibility to put it right: because they are the ones removing the ancient landmarks – “New cart” to carry the Ark of the Lord.

Many believers by nature are prone to shifting from any existing foundation for many reasons; some of which are

  • Nature – man is vulnerable, falling for satanic enticements, adamic nature etc.
  • Pressure – from persecution, peer, worldly Christians etc.
  • Popularity – preference, worldliness, norms of the day etc.
  • Tradition

Conclusion –

The position of the church now is to preserve the truth – the word of God. Many are in the world today who wants to know the truth; and most of them rely on what they will hear from the ministers of the word. Many show indifference to Christianity because, many Christian do not live a life of an example to convince the world. the scripture states

“Do we begin again to commend ourselves? Or do we need, as some others, epistles of commendation to you or letters of commendation from you? You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men; clearly you are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart” (2Cor. 3:1-3).

Many people want to hear the truth and would want to live by the truth; but, Christians who have the truth with them have failed to preserve it; hence, truth seekers are being deprived from knowing the truth. It is our joint responsibilities as Christians, ministers and believers alike, to show the world the landmarks of the word of God.

Christians must come together regardless of their denomination, affiliation, church, individual differences; we need to unite, fight a common war of faith; let us repair and restore the truth of the word of God without moving the ancient landmarks. Remember, a new cart used to carry the ark of covenant without the approval of God can have a serious consequence. The word of God from Genesis to Revelation is our inheritance that must not fade, but preserved; because it is new every morning till eternity. It must pass down to every succeeding generation.

Fighting against the name of God

Nations and individual spirituality is at downward trend. In the USA, the Ten Commandment has been removed from schools and public places. As if that is not enough; recently, some atheist still went ahead to file a suit in the Supreme Court; pushing to declare the reciting of national pledge in schools and public meetings as unconstitutional: Just because the name “God” is in it. Good anyway, the request was denied.

The effect of the removal of these landmarks may not be felt immediately, but if allowed, destructive landmarks are being laid which will affect the future generation of any nation, church or individual negatively.

Let me make this clear, the day that United States of America removes “In God we trust” from their currency, that day the economy of America will start to crumble; that day it will seize to be the most powerful nation; and that day the empire will fall.

Removal of total dependence on God

The scripture states

“Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord, (Is. 1:18a)

There is the need for Christians, especially, the ministers of the word, for a rethinking on how to restore these landmarks that have been removed or in the process of being removed. The downward trend of peace all over the world is partly the fault of Christians who are unable to stand their ground to lead the world in the way of the Lord.

Most of our recent past spiritual leaders have handed nothing much of spiritual inheritance to the coming generation. Technology has taking away our spiritual inheritance. God is the sole custodian of spiritual guide line that enhances development in humanity; he has given us this to benefit us; but is quickly forgotten that it is the doing of the Lord. Hence, new generation are forgetting the goodness and power of God as being responsible for where the world is today. There is the need to go back to the ancient landmarks of total dependence on God.

Lost of identity

Denominational issue is one of the problems facing Christianity today. Denominational doctrines have replaced the truth of the word of God; thus, truth has been compromised with error (Jude 3). Modern day prosperity preachers (Mammon preachers – Matt. 6:24) have obscured the ancient landmarks of Holiness. Thus believers have been robbed off of their vast spiritual inheritance and the enjoyment that is in it.

Our general identity as Christians has been replaced by denomination. To many Christians, to say “I’m a Christian” is not satisfactory answer to the question “are you a Christian?” however, they want you to mention which denomination you belong. The issue of denomination has reduced the oneness and unity expected among Christians today. Every denomination has its own doctrine fashioned to suites the belief of their founder; thus dividing Jesus Christ among themselves.

Every denomination and church doctrine and individual Christian life must be in line with these landmarks of apostolic doctrine:

  1. “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all” (Eph. 4:4-6)
  2. The Bible is one, from Genesis to Revelation; any condemnation of any part will render the whole word of God untrue. It is better and even necessary to use unadulterated  original translated Bible that are not biased in their commentary or those whose original meaning of the words has been changed or distorted (e.g. marriage order).
  3. Jesus Christ is the Son of God. The preeminence of Jesus Christ as Lord over the church is Paramount to our faith and church; not the crown or title. Crown or title does not make any human being be the head of the church. If this should happen, it then becomes idolatry. But the scripture states, But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (Jn. 423-24)
  4. The Lord Jehovah is the only true God. Right from creation, He has never change; His word has never change; and Jesus’ gospel is never in opposition to the law and the prophets. As God had delivered to Moses, He delivered to the prophets and He sent His Son to confirm the formers; and the Son empowers us with the Holy Spirit.
  5. Believe in the power of the Holy Spirit as the guiding light in any church or individual life.
  6. Baptism should be by immersion for those who profess faith in Jesus Christ as the Son of God. Jesus Christ instituted baptism primarily for public profession of faith, and that such a profession is part of the definition of baptism. Under new covenant, the requirement of personal faith before baptism is absolute.

How has the ancient landmark of Christian been removed or being removed?

The church is the chief Christian society which was established by Jesus Christ Himself, and it has some functions to perform which are inferred from the book of Isaiah. Five principal functions can be noted from the passage;

  1. To preach good tidings to the poor;
  2. To heal the brokenhearted,
  3. To proclaim liberty to the captives,
  4. To open the prison to those who are bound;
  5. To comfort all who mourn” (Is. 61:1&2)

These five functions can also be grouped under two words, deliverance and restoration. In another dimension it means the church’s function is to deliver and restore the poor, the brokenhearted, the captives, the prisoners and the mourners. It is the gospel, the word of God that has the power to do this; it is the word of God that can save anyone from sin and its power, or any of the distresses mentioned above: Also, the word restores a believer back to God.. Hence, Psalm 107:20 says

“He sent His word and healed them,
And delivered them from their destructions”

However, has the church lived up to satisfy these functions? What is noticed in the churches today shows that, some ancient landmarks of Christianity have been either, removed, moved or in the process of being removed. How?

Departure from established standards set in the scripture

There is no confusion about the Bible for those who study it under the unction of the Holy Spirit. From Genesis to Revelation, it is a complete word of God from which we cannot take away or add to it. Any alteration or adulteration of the word will render it ineffective. We are to strictly obey what it says. It is no light thing to tamper with God’s word, the set standard and the principle it sets for us. We must not change them or remove them in any way (Rev. 22:18-19).

What is noticed in our churches today is distortion of the word of God by false teachers and preachers. They have shifted or removed from the foundation and fundamental principles of apostolic doctrine. They practice selective obedience to only those parts that will justify their hidden motives. They condemned the law, but they don’t condemn the tithe; they preached grace, but they don’t mention sins: they have compromised the truth for unrighteous gain; mega and micro church for lucre.

Acceptance of evil and evil practices in the church

As previously stated that the function of the church is to deliver souls from sin and distress, and restore them to God. Has the church lived up to these responsibilities? The performances of the seven churches of Asia discussed in the book of Revelation 1&2 can be likened to the present day churches; only one out of seven churches today are living up to the apostolic doctrine that was handed down to us. There are few living churches; there are lukewarm churches; and there several dead churches in the world today.

Instead for the church to perform the function of deliverance and restoration of the proselytes; not much was done. Many were indeed preached to, but were not delivered; many were admitted in the Christian fold, but they did not change from their old behavior. Rather than being cleansed, sanctified and rid of their old behavior, they were encouraged to continue in their sin and waywardness under the guise they are under grace. Many continue to eschew evil and sin and failed to repent because the church accepted and justify their former state before their conversion.

False teachers and ministers removing ancient landmarks

“Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them. For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple” (Rom. 16:17-18).

Christians ought to study the word of God diligently so that they will not be mislead by many false Teachers who removed the landmark of the old and had created that which was not biblically supported. They are mere tradition called liberty to associate with the tradition of this present age; they are not from God.

Most tradition of men created as landmark for Christianity in this present day does not absorb the fear of God; the results are evident in the series of evil seen in our society today. Streets flowing with blood; child abuse; terrorism within and without; insecurity all over; divorce among Christians; rebellion of ungodly social movements: all these and more are caused because of the landmark of Christianity that has been removed.

The landmark of God’s established marriage order

In the beginning God established marriage order, He created man and woman primarily for two major reasons: 1) for reproduction; and 2) to love. It is disheartening, unreasonable and despicable the way the world is influencing the church to embrace and adopt same sex marriage in the church of God. The church should influence the world, not the opposite.

Legalizing same sex marriage is an example of the landmark of marriage that is being removed.

Is it not the church that supposed to tell the world the right thing to do? Does nature not show us that opposite sex have their different functions? Does nature not revealed the structure of opposite sex vividly? Why did the church descends so low to submit to the dictates of the world; It is shameful that some churches are supporting this movement; it is also shameful that many men of God cannot speak out against this because of the fear of not being accepted or avoiding the focus of media attention in the society.

The bible states

“Because from the least of them even to the greatest of them,
Everyone is given to covetousness;
And from the prophet even to the priest,
Everyone deals falsely…

Thus says the Lord:

“Stand in the ways and see,
And ask for the old paths, where the good way is,
And walk in it;
Then you will find rest for your souls (Jer. 6: 13&16)
