The life of Samson in the Bible teaches a lesson on how youths ought to mould their lives in the will of God and not to ignore the wise counsel of their parents. Samson violated God’s guideline, ignored and disobeyed the counseling of his parents. Moreover, he did not learn from his mistake even after receiving the grace for a second chance to amend his ways. At the end, his arrogant and obstinate behavior caused the tragedy end to his life.

Every child that is born is channeled into this world through their parents. One of the responsibilities of the parents is to guide and preventing the child from walking in the way of destruction.

One area that seems to generate disagreement between youths and their parents is the area of marriage. Choosing a future partner by youth is one of those responsibilities parents need to guide their son not to fall into the hand of a Delilah type of wife; or their daughter not to fall into the hand of a worthless man. No civilization or order of the day should change this pattern of seeking spiritual and parental guidance in choosing a future wife. Many parents have counseled their children to no avail; many youths would go their own ways to satisfy their lust or/and unwise desire.

The scripture admonishes youths,

My son, hear the instruction of your father,
And do not forsake the law of your mother;
For they will be a graceful ornament on your head,
And chains about your neck (Pro. 1: 8-9).

Many marriages that failed today are the result of many youths forsaken the counseling of their parents. The parents of Samson advised him not to marry from the philistine, knowing fully that they are the enemy of Israel; but he refused and disregarded his parent’s counseling: he satisfied his own lustful desire. This action would later become a stage set for the tragedy that ends his life.

Samson said to his father,

“Get her for me, for she pleases me well.” (Jug. 14:3)

The statement that Samson made to quiet his parents is still the same statement that youths are making to give their parents no choice than to stand by them. Many parents have been subjected to sleepless vigil and silence torture of the heart.

When Samson could not be convinced, as parents, they have no choice than to support him. They followed him to visit the parents of Timnah (the first philistine woman he loved). The love affair became an occasion for the philistine (enemies) to trap and conquer him. May you never be tempted to marry someone that will become an agent to your destruction.

The occasion became Tom and Jerry affairs; enemies disguising as friends. They were celebrating as in-laws, but, the motive of the philistine was to use the occasion to capture Israel.

Many youths have become victims of ignorance of the reality of life; especially, in the area of choosing a partner for a spouse. Marriage is the beginning of another journey in life; it needs spiritual and parental guidance; it needs the counseling of someone who has the experience. Do not ignore the counseling of your parents because, they advise you based on their experience, which should be the bedrock upon which to build your new life.

The need to walk in truth without removing the ancient landmarks

Let this be in the mind of all Christians that there is no disparity between the Old Testament and the New Testament. Both are very relevant and they form the bedrock for proper Christian living and practices. Therefore, let every Christian be faithful to observe and walk in the biblical landmarks – direct commandments and revelations from God, and the teaching of our Lord Jesus as laid down and practiced during the apostolic era.

We are to be careful about what we hear concerning the word of God; because, what we hear from teacher and preacher of the word can be sweet and hypnotizing the way it is expressed to impress their listeners with their thought. Many of these preachers and teachers are expert in psychology and are good vocalists; however, believers must be sensitive and discern no matter how plausible, popular, pressed or preferred their message. A Christian who reads the Bible daily will be able to do what the scripture says “test all things; and hold fast to what is good” (1Thess. 5:21).

We must be discipline, think rationally and be at alert to spiritual pitfall to prevent anyone from falling into the baits of false ministers of the word. Though, some wear physical or imaginary collars as ministers, many of them are enemies of the gospel because of their divided loyalty.

God’s truth is one of the old things; yet, it remains unchanging in reality. The truth that the world needs is rooted in the word of God, which are written of the old. Though old; still, it is new every day. Any new thing must be an offshoot of the old. Truth will always be truth.

Those that distorted the truth do it not because it is no more the truth; but they called it old because of their sinful selfish motive and expected unrighteous gains: their actions are not of God. Any change that does not stem in the truth of the word of God is wrong.

The scripture states that Demas has forsaken Paul for he loves this present world (2Tim 4:10); this is very true of many ministers and believers today; they have departed from ancient landmarks. However, I will keep pounding on the ministers of the word that they are responsible for the problem that is facing Christianity; and it is their responsibility to put it right: because they are the ones removing the ancient landmarks – “New cart” to carry the Ark of the Lord.

Many believers by nature are prone to shifting from any existing foundation for many reasons; some of which are

  • Nature – man is vulnerable, falling for satanic enticements, adamic nature etc.
  • Pressure – from persecution, peer, worldly Christians etc.
  • Popularity – preference, worldliness, norms of the day etc.
  • Tradition

Conclusion –

The position of the church now is to preserve the truth – the word of God. Many are in the world today who wants to know the truth; and most of them rely on what they will hear from the ministers of the word. Many show indifference to Christianity because, many Christian do not live a life of an example to convince the world. the scripture states

“Do we begin again to commend ourselves? Or do we need, as some others, epistles of commendation to you or letters of commendation from you? You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men; clearly you are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart” (2Cor. 3:1-3).

Many people want to hear the truth and would want to live by the truth; but, Christians who have the truth with them have failed to preserve it; hence, truth seekers are being deprived from knowing the truth. It is our joint responsibilities as Christians, ministers and believers alike, to show the world the landmarks of the word of God.

Christians must come together regardless of their denomination, affiliation, church, individual differences; we need to unite, fight a common war of faith; let us repair and restore the truth of the word of God without moving the ancient landmarks. Remember, a new cart used to carry the ark of covenant without the approval of God can have a serious consequence. The word of God from Genesis to Revelation is our inheritance that must not fade, but preserved; because it is new every morning till eternity. It must pass down to every succeeding generation.

Have you read part 1&2?

Fighting against the name of God

Nations and individual spirituality is at downward trend. In the USA, the Ten Commandment has been removed from schools and public places. As if that is not enough; recently, some atheist still went ahead to file a suit in the Supreme Court; pushing to declare the reciting of national pledge in schools and public meetings as unconstitutional: Just because the name “God” is in it. Good anyway, the request was denied.

The effect of the removal of these landmarks may not be felt immediately, but if allowed, destructive landmarks are being laid which will affect the future generation of any nation, church or individual negatively.

Let me make this clear, the day that United States of America removes “In God we trust” from their currency, that day the economy of America will start to crumble; that day it will seize to be the most powerful nation; and that day the empire will fall.

Removal of total dependence on God

The scripture states

“Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord, (Is. 1:18a)

There is the need for Christians, especially, the ministers of the word, for a rethinking on how to restore these landmarks that have been removed or in the process of being removed. The downward trend of peace all over the world is partly the fault of Christians who are unable to stand their ground to lead the world in the way of the Lord.

Most of our recent past spiritual leaders have handed nothing much of spiritual inheritance to the coming generation. Technology has taking away our spiritual inheritance. God is the sole custodian of spiritual guide line that enhances development in humanity; he has given us this to benefit us; but is quickly forgotten that it is the doing of the Lord. Hence, new generation are forgetting the goodness and power of God as being responsible for where the world is today. There is the need to go back to the ancient landmarks of total dependence on God.

Lost of identity

Denominational issue is one of the problems facing Christianity today. Denominational doctrines have replaced the truth of the word of God; thus, truth has been compromised with error (Jude 3). Modern day prosperity preachers (Mammon preachers – Matt. 6:24) have obscured the ancient landmarks of Holiness. Thus believers have been robbed off of their vast spiritual inheritance and the enjoyment that is in it.

Our general identity as Christians has been replaced by denomination. To many Christians, to say “I’m a Christian” is not satisfactory answer to the question “are you a Christian?” however, they want you to mention which denomination you belong. The issue of denomination has reduced the oneness and unity expected among Christians today. Every denomination has its own doctrine fashioned to suites the belief of their founder; thus dividing Jesus Christ among themselves.

Every denomination and church doctrine and individual Christian life must be in line with these landmarks of apostolic doctrine:

  1. “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all” (Eph. 4:4-6)
  2. The Bible is one, from Genesis to Revelation; any condemnation of any part will render the whole word of God untrue. It is better and even necessary to use unadulterated  original translated Bible that are not biased in their commentary or those whose original meaning of the words has been changed or distorted (e.g. marriage order).
  3. Jesus Christ is the Son of God. The preeminence of Jesus Christ as Lord over the church is Paramount to our faith and church; not the crown or title. Crown or title does not make any human being be the head of the church. If this should happen, it then becomes idolatry. But the scripture states, But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (Jn. 423-24)
  4. The Lord Jehovah is the only true God. Right from creation, He has never change; His word has never change; and Jesus’ gospel is never in opposition to the law and the prophets. As God had delivered to Moses, He delivered to the prophets and He sent His Son to confirm the formers; and the Son empowers us with the Holy Spirit.
  5. Believe in the power of the Holy Spirit as the guiding light in any church or individual life.
  6. Baptism should be by immersion for those who profess faith in Jesus Christ as the Son of God. Jesus Christ instituted baptism primarily for public profession of faith, and that such a profession is part of the definition of baptism. Under new covenant, the requirement of personal faith before baptism is absolute.
