Do not fast with the flesh, but be moved by the Spirit into fasting. Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to fast.

“Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him”

Because He was led by the Spirit and not by His flesh, He was empowered to overcome the temptations that confronted Him. As Christians, we ought to be led by the Spirit or allow the Spirit to take over our spirit when we embark on prayer and fasting.

Fasting is not just a mere denial of oneself from food or drink or anything that is of the flesh, but also, a time to dedicate that moment solely for God and within God’s environment. There is time for everything on earth. The time to devote for God must be strictly for Him. Not a time to bombard yourself with food, not a time to attend a party, not a moment to drive by a fast-food corridor or a time for you to drop at liquor store to buy soda. Fasting time is to restrict every movement away from what the devil will take advantage of.

Let’s look at the three temptations the devil put before Jesus

  1. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.  The tempter came to him and said “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
  2.  Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:

He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone

  1. Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me”.

Looking at the temptations, everything that the devil tempted Jesus with is within the power of Jesus to provide. The food which is the restorer of strength and power in our body, He provides; the highest point of the temple which represents the highest position on earth and in heaven belongs to Jesus; and all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor are also His. Why then should Jesus bow to the devil to get what belongs to Him?

One of the areas the devil takes advantage of is when a Christian embarks on fasting and prayer, the devil wants to rob the Christian of their expected blessing by making them to satisfy the things of the flesh. If we Christians would get the understanding of these temptations, we will not fall into any temptation (trap of the devil), you don’t go into fasting with the flesh, but in the power of the Holy Spirit. In that way, the Spirit will at that moment of temptation empower you to discern right.

There is always that urge in a man/woman to move pass the right time of life or to push aside the right thing to do or to incline doing that which is wrong. What the flesh does is to satisfy this urge without minding the consequence. If our Lord Jesus had not been moved into the wilderness by the Spirit, what would have happened? Would He bow down to the devil? But because He did not, He was given all powers over all creations?

Beware of these three quests

The three temptations represents the three most quests of man on earth and desirously will do anything to get it. If not seek righteously pursued, man will worship the devil to get it. Man or woman likes

1)      Food

2)      Position/Authority

3)      Money/wealth

I can reason with many Christian groups, each time they want to embark on general prayer and fasting, they go to a secluded area where these three quests are far away from them so that they can concentrate on being before God without any distraction.

If Jesus had fallen to the devil’s temptation, the devil would have had an edge over His ministry. Refusing to bow down for the devil for that moment, Jesus had a successful ministry and today, He is the provider and sustainer of all our needs and wants. When you are led by the Spirit to fast or allow the Spirit to take over your spirit when you fast, the Holy Spirit will not only guide you during the fasting period but also after it.

Learning from Jesus’ discuss

We need to learn from one of Jesus’ discusses, “Do not worry” (Luke 12:22-31). What Jesus rejected and refused to bow down for are things that human being is running after -  What to eat, what to wear, house to live, car to drive, career to be famous, money, position; anxious about all things.

You don’t have to worship any demon, man or any abstract to get all you need or want. God had already made the provisions there. However, when you request for these things in prayer and fasting, what is your motive?. When you fast, are you doing it to fulfill God’s purpose or your own ulterior motive?

For our Lord Jesus, being led by the Spirit, shows that He was led to be empowered to fulfill God’s purpose that He came into the world to do. When the devil failed, the scripture stated “Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him”

Has an angel minister to you during your recent fasting program? Or has there been any residue effect of the Holy Spirit upon your life besides being under Him during the fasting period? Just as our Lord Jesus demonstrated, do the main thing first; other things will fall in place for you. The scripture confirms,

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you” (Matt.6:33).

Children of God, when you pray and fast, make sure you are led by the Holy Spirit or submit your spirit under the power of the Holy Spirit when you are not led. Three things must come to mind when you embark on prayer and fasting. Firstly, you want to build a strong relationship with God in His presence. Secondly, make sure your request is genuine without any hidden motive than fulfilling the purpose of God. Thirdly, let your request be for empowerment to do the will of God.

By Lawrence Abitogun

As it is in the beginning of any period, challenges are inevitable. Year 2017 is another year, another period, another processing and a new journey of life. Even though the year would be packed with God’s blessing as ever, it would not be without some hiccups, inevitable and unknown challenges. However, the Lord God Almighty will help us to overcome any challenge and we shall receive our full package of blessings in Jesus name.

First thing first

Let us begin by acknowledging the goodness of God upon our lives in the past years.
Worship the Lord, magnify him, praise His Holy name in Psalms and in songs, worship Him spiritually and with your whole body; for who He is, what He has done, what His doing and for what He will do.

Prayer of thanks to the Lord in all areas – you cannot thank Him enough, you just have to thank Him at all times.

• For His goodness and activities in your life;
• For the gift of life, keeping you alive to this day
• For Physical and spiritual blessings, endowments and provisions in your life
• For Healing, deliverance and victories He accorded you in all challenges of life
• For Protection, safety and prevention from seen and unseen evil occurrences
• For Divine attractions, grace, mercy, favor and promotion that you have received

Prayer of repentance – Your sin will not spill over into the new year; therefore, Acknowledge, confess your sins and repent – then, pray for

• Mercy to overturn every judgment and penalty of sin
• Forgiveness of any wrong doing.
• purging of our body and soul from any defilement
• deliverance from sin and its power
• A refreshing time in the presence of the Lord (Acts 3:19).

Prayer of rededication, pray

• that God will create you anew
• for fresh anointing of the spirit of God upon your life
• for renewal of God’s power upon your life
• for grace and empowerment to live a sin less life
• for grace and empowerment to live to please God

Word of courage for the journey of life in year 2017

The new year may seems to be like any other yesteryears, it come and go, but year 2017 has just began and yet to join the circle of past years. One reality though is that the journey is long and you need to lay aside any whatever that will not allow you to finish the journey successfully. The year is full of successes; however, all situations will require you to focus and endure to the end.
Whatever situation you may find yourself, whatever you may go through, whatever news is being herald, or wherever the wind of circumstance may affect you; you need to call on our God and tell Him “my eyes are on You”. Then, focus on Jesus because, He is the author and finisher of our faith; He will empower you to endure through to the end of the year. Are you prepared for the journey?

Learn from Jehoshaphat’s preparedness

Jehoshaphat is one of my favorite persons (a king) in the Bible. The very moment he ascended to the throne as king of Judah, he prepared himself physically and spiritually for the challenges a person of his caliber would face as a king. Read the excerpt.
“Then Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his place, and strengthened himself against Israel. And he placed troops in all the fortified cities of Judah, and set garrisons in the land of Judah and in the cities of Ephraim which Asa his father had taken. Now the Lord was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the former ways of his father David; he did not seek the Baal, but sought the God of his father, and walked in His commandments and not according to the acts of Israel. “ Therefore the Lord established the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah gave presents to Jehoshaphat, and he had riches and honor in abundance. And his heart took delight in the ways of the Lord; moreover he removed the high places and wooden images from Judah.
“Also in the third year of his reign he sent his leaders and priests to teach in the cities of Judah: And with them he sent Levites…so they taught in Judah, and had the Book of the Law of the Lord with them; they went throughout all the cities of Judah and taught the people” (2Chro. 17:1-90.
As you enter into the new year you need to prepare yourself physically and spiritually for the challenges ahead.

Jehoshaphat prepared physically

Jehoshaphat strengthens himself by putting troops in the fortified cities and setting garrison in Judah. Within his human ability and empowerment, he has to protect what was committed to his charge. In the new year, how have you prepared physically to succeed in all your ways
God has deposited some abilities, gifts and physical empowerment in you; how have you prepared for the proper utilization of these endowments to glorify God and for the well-being of what pertains to you – your happiness and comfort; financial stability; security and safety of your family and property; your welfare and good health; and the good fortune that the Lord has prepared for you in the new year.

Jehoshaphat prepared Spiritually

More importantly, Jehoshaphat prepared himself spiritually for divine empowerment. How did he prepared, the Bible states that: he sought the Lord God; he did not seek baal (idol of the heart or the orders of this world); he walked in the commandment of God; his heart took delight in the ways of the Lord; he remove the high places and wooding image from Judah (God is priority in all his ways): and He established school of theology in Judah.
How is your prayer life? how often do you plan to accompany your prayer time with fasting? how is your prayer altar at home? and what is your plan as to your contribution to the work of the gospel in your church this year? How have you prepared?
Your spiritual preparedness will reflect in the outcome of the physical manifestation. Spiritual and physical preparedness are mutual; the two work hand-in-hand. You cannot prepare physically and not spiritually, or else, you won’t have the power you need to overcome the challenges ahead. (Jas. 2:14-26) the Bible declared that “if you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small (Pro. 24:10), therefore, be diligent this year.

Be diligent in year 2017 (Pro. 12:24).

Isaac received command from God not to go to Egypt because of the famine in Gerra. God promised to bless him in Gerra. Isaac obeyed and remained there. However, Isaac did not sit down expecting mana free of charge from heaven, but the bible states that Isaac sowed in the land that year and he reaped 100 folds while famine was hitting the inhabitants of the land. The key thing here is this, Isaac believed and obeyed God (spiritual preparedness) and he sowed (physical preparedness). Brethren, are you prepared? You must obey God. You also need to focus on getting your goal.

Stay focus

Stay focus to get your dream and goal come to reality in year 2017. In as much as God has granted you the grace to cross over to the new year, gaze your eyes on the Lord to lead you to overcome any challenge that may surface in all your endeavors.
In 2 kings 2:1-10, Elisha knew what he wanted from Elijah, his goal was to get double portion of the spirit of Elijah. Before Elisha got to the point where he declared his goal to his master, he had scaled over some hurdles, the challenges of distraction, discouragement, delay, obstruction etc. Right from the onset that he knew his master would be taken up. He pays attention to every moment all the way to the goal line. Read an excerpt of the story,
“When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?”
“Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,” Elisha replied.
“You have asked a difficult thing,” Elijah said, “yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours—otherwise, it will not.” (2Ki. 2:9-10)
Please do what Elisha did in order to remain focus in the new year. As a child of God, you are a goal getter, confronting and overcoming challenges empowers you to remain focus in any embankment. What did Elijah do?

• He has a goal – you must set your goal and priority, you need to know what you want to achieve
• He was focus on getting his goal – you must be focused in order to achieve your goal regardless of any challenge – constraints
• He rejected distraction from the sons of the prophets – you must reject distraction from close associates or acquaintances.
• He rejected negative indications – All it requires is you believing in yourself that you will get it right – be a goal getter
• He rejected discouragement from the sons of the prophet – whatever fact or economy indices signaled, you must not shiver because you are operating in the heavenly economy to succeed in the earthly economy.
• He refused to be delayed or stopped from advancing to the finish line – do not give up even when situation seems bleak.
• He did not ask for less – you have to think big and do not belittle yourself, but believe in your divine endowment to think big and achieve big. Don’t make the mistake, It is erroneous to think of any situation to be too small for you to call on God to intervene.
• Every moment was significant to him as he advanced toward the mark – be sensitive moment by moment as you advance and turn death ear to any whispering of discouragement.
• He followed up to the goal line and he achieved his goal – do not be weary or tired. When you are down spiritually or physically, arouse the Holy Ghost power to energize you. it is not over until you have achieved

The unforeseen and the inevitable

When you find yourself in a situation that is peaceful, joyous, happy and rosy and everything seems to be working in your favor, there you need more of God’s protection and empowerment to maintain that which is good. God’s blessing can be so much in your life that you may not be able to handle it just like the prodigal son could not handle his inheritance. The blessing can make you power drunk and you become proud, it can make you to forget your God.
Therefore, as good as it sound, it is a big challenge to maintain good things, and you have no power of your own to do this. Good thing or situation needs maintenance (Tit, 3:8), your eyes must be on the Lord to build a hedge around you and your possessions (Job 1:6-11). Therefore you need God’s empowerment to maintain the good times and things in order to avoid any evil orchestration.
If you find yourself in a mediocrity situation, you need God’s empowerment for improvement.
If on the contrary you find yourself in a difficult situation – problem, hardship, economic challenges, natural and human disasters, health issues, family issue, work related problem etc. what will you do? Like what happened to Jehoshaphat, bombarded by enemies, what would you do? How should you react to health or life threatening situation if it happens?
In all odds, universal or personal; when you are faced with a situation that is beyond your control in year 2017; your first reaction should be to seek help from God (Ps. 121). This is the reason Jehoshaphat received favor from God, he seeks the Lord.
God may directly go into action on your behalf or He may send help; no one can predict what He will do, but He will help; He is a present help in time of trouble or need (Ps. 46:1); hence Jehoshaphat sets his eyes on the Lord, the scripture states
“…And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. So Judah gathered together to ask help from the Lord; and from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the Lord. “O our God, will You not judge them? For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.” (2Chro 20:1-12)
When you find yourself in some challenging or difficult situations in the new year and you don’t know what to do, just like Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah did, the best thing to do is to fix your eyes on the Lord and say “my eyes are upon you O Lord”. Then, pray unto God, accompany it with fasting then beginning to sing praises unto the Lord and wait for your victory. (Ps. 37:3-8)
You have to call on God to intervene in your situation, claim His promises of old as it relates to your present situation. In 2Chro.20:1-12, Jehoshaphat reminded God of His old promises concerning Israel. He now appeals to God to intervene.

Jehoshaphat leans on God for revelation on what to do

After focusing on God for intervention, leave everything unto Him; wait for instruction on what to do; and follow the instruction to letter as Jehoshaphat did. You must do the followings,
• Your heart must be right with God. David said in Ps 18:1-3 that
o I will love God
o I will trust God
o I will call on God and
o I will praise God
• Hand over your challenges onto God (Matt. 11:28-30)
• Take your position – stand firm in the Lord, no amount of bad or negative news should disturb your activities spiritually and physically. Stand firm in faith, believe the word of God and promises concerning your situation, and work according to His will.
• Do not be afraid, but be courageous
• You have to face your battle even though God is fighting it on your behalf. You cannot run away from your challenges because through it God will strengthen you, and in it there He will provide a way for victory (1 Cor. 10:13). Your battles and challenges are training ground for you and a stepping stone for a higher responsibility (promotion, breakthrough, increase, expansion etc.).
Joseph had to face the path of servitude before rising to stardom in a strange land. Daniel must be a captive before becoming an ambassador of God in a strange land – serving under three different heathen kings as second in command.
Whatever situation you find yourself or whatever challenge you may be facing in the new year, lean on God for revelation on what to do. Call on Him; He will delight in you, He will hear you, He will intervene on your behalf, He will fight your battle and He will deliver you.
Haven done all these, as God rewarded Jehoshaphat, will He not reward you more now that you have Christ in your life and the spirit of God lives in you?
Whatever situation you may be passing through, good or the contrary, someone had passed through a similar situation. How do they handle it to become a hero or a victim? Victory in those situations has been linked with people who trust, obey, and hand-over their situation over to God.

Faith plays a key role in year 2017

You must imitate our Lord Jesus; He had a goal – to lay hold of the joy that was set before Him. How did He achieve this goal? He was focused; He would not allow circumstances (joy, happiness, riches; nor sorrow, shame, suffering, etc.) to stop Him from attaining that joy. What else did he do? He endured the cross (He suffered and died to liberate humanity)
Read the excerpt,
“Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Heb. 2: 1-2)
Chapter 11 which precedes this chapter 12 of the book of Hebrew speaks of many examples of people who by faith overcame challenges of life. They are children of God as we are in this end time. The author wants you to learn from them, especially, their faith. Faith will play a key role in your successes in year 2017.
The passage advises you to look at Jesus; whose life’s experience sums up all challenges and sufferings that anyone can have and how He was victorious at the end. He will start and end year 2017 with you. The chapter mentioned of the cloud of witnesses (faith heroes who had faced and overcame tough challenges of life); the chapter then advises you to lay aside weights and sins that can set you back or be hindrances to achieving your goal. Therefore, you need to look at Jesus in order to run the race of the New Year successfully.

The place of the word of God in your life in year 2017

The Bible made us to know that in the time of the law, when the tabernacle was completed and the ark of the Lord was put in its place, the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle to the extent that Moses could not enter it (Exo. 40:34-35).
In the days of the kings, the ark was put in the Solomon’s temple, no more in the tabernacle. The only thing in the ark was the two tablets of stone containing the laws (the word of God). After the ark has been put into its place the Bible states that the priests could not continue ministering because of the cloud; for the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord” (1Ki 8:10-11).
In this dispensation of grace, the Bible called us the temple of the living God
“ … For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said:
“I will dwell in them
And walk among them.
I will be their God,
And they shall be My people.” (2Cor. 6:16; 1Cor.3:16)
If the glory of God would fill the tabernacle and the temple that was made with hand because the ark of the Lord (containing the word) was put in its right place; how much more would the glory of the Lord fill your life if the word of God would dwell richly in your heart in year 2017. Don’t you know that the Word in your life is the presence of God in your life?

When the Israelites left Egypt, their focal point was to get to the promise land as a free nation to serve the Lord. For them to stay focus they must avoid distraction or any side attraction that may want to shift their mind and eyes from getting to the promise land – the focal point.
Year 2016 is a new journey of life that is full of promises and blessings of God. However, satan will also want to operate to prevent children of God from being a partaker of these promises and blessings.
Therefore, in spite of all the promises and blessings, there is bound to be distractions caused by human and nature. The distractions will be caused by adversities (negative ideologies, antagonism, opposition, confrontations, enemy and perilous enticements; obstacles and difficulties; inducement of the devil to cause limitation, delay, procrastination or discouragement; and natural disasters. The occurrence of these odds can shift one’s mind or eyes from being focused.
Before the time you crossed into the New Year, you have many plans you have purposed to accomplish in the year. God knows your thought, as long as it is in line with His will and you subject yourself to His directives, He will surely go before you; He will lead you; His spirit will direct your thought and action. He will help you to accomplish your goal; he will not allow any distraction to cross your path or overcome you. Neither will He allow any of those odds to cause you to go back into the woes of the past: Rather, He will help and strengthen you to overcome any adversity.

The Lord your God, He is the one who goes with you

“Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you; He will not leave you nor forsake you” (Deut. 31:6).
Your journey of life each moment resembles the Israelites journey from Egypt to the promise land. It illustrates right and wrong actions taken by the Israelites and their payback. Your behavior and attitude as a Christian who sojourns in this earth will determine your achievement and success by the end of the year.
As a believer you want to be free and prosperous in the New Year, you must stay within the bound of God’s lead. Hence, this prayer bulletin which is more like crosses to freedom and prosperity implies that a person who is presently in bondage can gain freedom; someone who is in a state of poverty can leave that zone and become prosperous in this New Year.
For you as a Christian to attain the fullness of your freedom, prosperity, destiny, goal, promises of God, and eternal home in heaven, you have to pass through two crossovers.
1. The Red Sea
2. The Jordan River
However, in between the Red Sea and the Jordan River is a journey, an experience that every Christian cannot but have. It is a critical period, which determines whether a person will cross the second crossover or not. This period is what I call the wilderness experience.
By the special grace of God, you have crossed over from year 2015 to 2016, I congratulate you; you have crossed over your Red Sea. What next? You have to get to the Jordan River before you can cross into your promise land. Every situation in the New Year has its own Jordan to cross. The crossing of the Red sea symbolizes the total surrender of your life and the final determination to embark on a particular mission, goal, journey to freedom or whatever may be your undertaking. You have begun the journey into year 2016; you are at the point of no return. Begin to move forward.
What awaits you in your promise land in the New Year is freedom, prosperity, success, dream realization, good health, victory etc. Are you going to get there? Now, I ask you, who is leading you in your way, who is directing your affairs in year 2016? The outcome of your wilderness experience will determine whether you will cross over Jordan to your promise land or not. Be sensitive to God’s lead; you need to focus.

When passing through your wilderness, trust God

The wilderness experience represents the process taken or experienced before achieving a set goal. The smallest or easiest activity of man goes through some processes before it accomplishes its goal.
Wilderness experience is so dramatic that you kept on wondering how it will turn out; because it is a journey you have not travelled before. Expect some inevitable challenges that are specifically set in place to displace and distract you from focusing. 2016 is another period in the journey of life; as you know that journey of life is a war, you are not going to fight it in the physical temporal plane, but it is a spiritual warfare.
Wilderness experience requires patience. Patience is bearing affliction, waiting, standing fast under pressure and having faith that turns adversity to opportunity. Your patience and endurance will be tested, but be careful, do not crosses the line of tolerance; it can rob you of your blessing; wait on God.
No matter how or what the circumstance, you should resolutely trust God (Job 40:8; 42:1-6). Do not trust in any earthly things, they lead to boredom and despair. But build on a strong relationship with your Creator; He cares for you and truly will satisfy you. Confidence in any person, thing, riches/ wealth, government system or economy indices other than God Himself through our Lord Jesus Christ is misplaced trust.
Do you know that the downfall of ones earthly confidant produces sorrow? (2Samuel 4:1)
Things are simply not what we think they ought to be, but God is still in control and He works His good purpose through events we do not most of the time understand. All you need to do is cast your care upon Him, for He cares for you (Jas. 5:7). Focus on where God is taking you and do not border yourself with breaking news.

Follow the Lord’s directives

The way and how the Lord will lead you may not be the common way of the world. How the Lord thinks is not the way the world thinks. Therefore, it is the spirit of the Lord that will tell and input in your mind what to do.
When the Israelites left Egypt, the Bible states,
“God led the Israelites not by way of the land of the philistines, although that was nearer (which normally will be preferred by wise people of this world); for God said, lest the people change purpose when they see war and return to Egypt. But God led the people around by way of the wilderness toward the red sea” (Exo. 13: 17-18).
Follow the way of righteousness steadily with God guidance, God will take you through your own peculiar way which, when you are faced with challenges in the New Year, He will guide and help you to overcome.

2016 journey is by faith: not by sight

The Bible declared that –
“But without faith it is impossible to please God:
for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him” (Heb. 11:6).
Faith destroys negative thoughts and advances the positive thoughts
The transitional period of any undertaking (achieving a set goal or accomplishing a mission) is to be run by faith and not by sight. Faith is you trusting in the Lord to take you through the whole process of your undertaking no matter what stands in your way. It is your faith in the Lord that guarantees you the confidence to achieve, and believing in His power and promises concerning you. Your faith in Him means you are casting your burden on Him. Your faith in Him builds your faith in your undertaking. Start to live by faith right now.
If you pursue your undertaking by sight, you will not likely accomplish; why? Many things you will see during the year will look dreadful, frightening and discouraging. They are difficulties, which stand to be mountains and valleys; they are hindrances and obstacles that are against you achieving your set goals, against gaining your liberty or against crossing to the better side.
It is your faith in God through our Lord Jesus that will help your faith in your plans and your faith in anticipation. Moreover, your conformity to the will and purpose of God peculiarly for your life will completely grant you your heart desire.

Circumcise you heart<

“Above all else, guard your heart, for; everything you do flows from it. Keep you mouth free of perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the path for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn right or the left; keep your foot from evil (Pro. 4:23-27).
How do you circumcise your heart? Worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ and place not your confidence in any human honor or accomplishment as a means to reaching God. But, embark on things that are true, noble, just, pure, lovely and things that are of good report (Phil. 4:8-9).
Another way you can circumcise your heart is to avoid being a sharer of what modern Christians called “norms of the day” – Sensual pleasure (lust of the flesh), covetousness (lust of the eye) and position and power (pride of life).

Be diligent: not slothful

“The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the slothful shall be under tribute”. (Pr. 12:24)
“Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathered by labor shall increase”. (Pr. 13:11)
To be self-sufficient and to live a fulfilled life of your choice this year, you must work hard for it. Whatever level of wealth you wish to acquire in life, you must be ready to work for it. Ill-gotten wealth will never last. One thing is to have faith in God; have faith in your goal; obeying the word of God; and so on; the other thing is for you to do your own part; work hard in order to receive favor and multiply greatly (Gen. 26:12-13).
“Whatever your hands finds to do, do it with all your might…” (Eccl. 9:10). Let success or failure (not with those working according to the will of God) rest in the hand of God, but get to the task.

Don’t look backward

Looking and moving forward helps moving fast to accomplishing ones objective. Looking backward to what is behind will hinder your progress, slow you down or even not allowing you to achieve.
Lot’s wife disobeyed the command not to look back; she was reluctant to leave what she enjoys most – enjoyment, the world, sinful nature etc. and was unable to make it to safety (Gen. 19:17-26).
In the New Year, let your thought be to move forward even in the face of any hardship or difficulty. Don’t be a quitter, you need to press forward; hence, Apostle Paul says,
“Brethren, …: but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead. I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Phi. 3:13-14).
What is ahead in year 2016 is greater and brighter things than things you left behind in the past years. Do not focus on despair, rejection, disappointment, hardship, loss of something precious or fleshy and sinful attributes etc, throw them behind you. When all these things kept pumping back into your mind, they weigh you down and prevent you from moving forward.
The book of Hebrews advices
“Let us lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith…” (Heb. 12:1-2).
Negatives must not hold you back; they continue to hurt you if you don’t let it go. Fix your eyes on God for a new thing that He will make to happen. Why don’t you start by thanking Him for what He will do this new year?

Learn to be thankful every moment of the New Year

Many Christians are willing to promise anything during the time of stress or need; but as soon as the stress stops, their hearts becomes hardened and become unwilling to do what they have promised. They are unthankful for what God had done talk less of thanking Him for what He is about to do.
Peradventure things do not work out the way you expected this year, continue to praise God; when it is good or bad, learn to be thankful always,: Let your thanks be more than your request.

Be obedient to the word of God

“Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God….And to whom swear he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not? So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief”. (Heb. 3:12-19)
The psalmist said
“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee”. (Ps. 119:11)
The book of Isaiah said further
“If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the fruit of the land”. (Is. 1:19)
The word of God is your teacher to teach you how to walk, where to stand and where to sit (Ps. 1). What do I mean by this statement? It is the word of God that will teach and direct you how best to position yourself this year.
As a believer, let you undertakings be governed by the word of God. If you are seeking the best way to pursue anything, the word of God will show you the way to go. If you are confused during the year, the word of God will help you unknot difficulties. If you are lost in the wilderness (in whatever you are doing) the word of God will show you the way out.
The place of the word of God in your life in the year is very important in that you must apply it to the circumstances of your life. If you fully adhere and obedient to the word of God, there are numerous blessings awaiting you in your own promise land. One thing you need to understand is that blessing follows obedience (Jos. 22:2-5 &8).

Be zealous for the work of God

Eleazar, the grandson of Aaron was given the covenant of an everlasting priesthood for being zealous with the zeal of God. Try not to allow anything to take the place of God in your life; be dedicated and committed to the things of God; and make Him priority in all things, and see what the Lord will do.

Beware of agents of obstruction

One of satan’s tactics is to obstruct forward progress of the children of God. An obstructionist sees one who is prospering as a threat out of envy and jealousy. He will do anything to cause a careless and insensitive Christian to sin against God or misdirect him/her away from the right course.
Balaam is an agent of the devil who has the power to do and undo, to inflict injury upon anyone who is not in the will of God.
A Christian will fall victim of an obstructionist if he/she operates outside the bound, directive and will of God. Be focused and follow God leading.

Seek God’s approval

Seek God’s approval to approve the person of anybody, any step that you want to take, any undertaking you want to embark upon, so that you will not fall victim or enter into a covenant with your enemy (Jos. 9:14). You need to ask for specifics in any instruction you receive either spiritual or real to life.
Manoah asked specific question about the person of his son Samson (Jud. 13:12). Observance and compliance is important to God’s instruction. However, ask questions that does not signify unbelief. You cannot be irrational when it comes to obeying the word of God. Be like David who asked for specific instruction
• To pursue the Amelikites or not at Ziglag (1 Sam. 30:8)
• To fight the philistine at the stronghold or not (2 Sam. 5:19)
One of the ways you can be focus is to get clarity of instruction and follow to letter.

Strengthen yourself in the Lord always

It is not all the time you will find people to encourage you in the right way; in fact, they will discourage you more. Elisha was discouraged by Elijah and the sons of the prophet from following Elijah to the place of his (Elisha) empowerment when Elijah was about to be taking up to heaven. But Elisha was focused in that no one would stop him from getting to that place of his blessing.
What you need to do 99% of the time is to encourage yourself in the Lord. The scripture states that David strengthens himself in the Lord (1Sam. 30:6). The Lord told Joshua to be strong and courageous (Jos. 1:7-8)
As a Christian, always encourage yourself in the Lord in whatever you want to do or in any situation you may be passing through. Nobody will do it for you; so, fix your attention on God to direct you in all your endeavors.

Review and renew your stand with the Lord

Do not rely on your past experience as far as your success is concern, though it works for you in the past; still, seek for a new revelation that suits the present situation. The love of God and His goodness comes new to us every morning. God does not duplicate His old strategy to win a new battle, but every new battle is won with a new weapon and strategy. Therefore, renew your stand with God everyday of the New Year.

Be sensitive and on-guard every moment of the year

The following 7 points will help you to be on-guard and sensitive
1. Do not wax cold for your love for Christ
2. Be faithful and do not deny your faith in any situation you find yourself
3. Do not compromise with the things of this world neither you partake in devil’s destructive enjoyment
4. Do not bite the devil’s inducement which will corrupt you to sin against God.
5. Always examine your stand with the Lord
6. Be open to the truth; it will guard and guide you firmly as you walk in the way of your destiny
7. Hold fast to the truth and faithfully worship the Lord.

The scripture states
“…humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God (your main point of focus), that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your cares upon Him, for He cares for you”
“Be sober and vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour (1Pet. 5:7-8).
Christian brothers and sisters, your goal in the New Year is to cross to your promise land. To achieve this, you need to stay focus so that satan will not derail you and rob you of what is waiting for you there.
Your promise land represents the life in this world and eternity with Christ in the presence of God. Your eternity starts with the quality of life you live now. Why don’t you start living it with humility and reverence, trusting and focusing on God for the fulfillment of His purpose, promise and blessing for your life in the New Year?
