The experience of His glory cannot be understood unless we know what His glory is. This glory is the same as the glory of God. The glory of God is such a massive phrase that would be difficult to define; hence I use the word massive. There is no word, sentence or paragraph that could be used to define it. Nothing from past generations has been used to give a simple definition. But this write-up would give us a good picture and understanding of what the glory of God is.

What is His Glory?
The glory of God is all about the Creator, the power of the creator and what is created. The glory of God is who God is character wise; His power seen in creation; and His sovereignty over all that was created. It is about all that exists; that is, what has been revealed, what are presently being revealed and the unknown that would be revealed since new things are being revealed to us daily.
Man knows a little about the earth where he resides not to talk of what is beyond his scope. Imagine new discoveries since creation, man is still tapping into what God had created and he is far from knowing or understanding how all came to be.
From what has been created, man attributes glory to them all. He attributes glory to human performance, glory to season, glory to beauty, glory to age, glory to power and glory to each of the creation. An attempt to define it is like someone who wants to sum up innumerable things under one word or phrase.
The Bible states,
“There is one glory of the sun, another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for one star differs from another star in glory” (1Cor, 15:41).
Each creation has its own glory. All these glories take stem from one source of gloy, God’s glory. Now, imagine how great, how huge, how mighty the glory of our God is; indescribable and inconceivable.

The glory of God is about God’s character
The glory of God describes His character: merciful, loving, faithful, caring, forgiving, etc. besides, what makes a man is given by Him. He breathes the breath of life into man, he gave him dominion over His creations and whatever may describe a man’s glory is tapped from what belongs to Him, His glory.
Whatever describes the glory of anything stems out of God, the sole custodian of all glories. The following words that describe glory are solely attributed to God because He does not share His glory with anything.
• Honor
• Praise
• Majesty
• Power
• Strength
• Beauty
• Worship
• Righteousness
• Justice

The glory of God is about His power
The glory conveys God’s awing nature due to His exclusive sovereignty power over all creations. It contains wonders that surpass man’s understanding. Talk of the coordinating power of His creation like the solar system; the rotation and revolution of the earth which never misses the time of the day or period of seasons; dateless of His creation and the endlessness of His revelation. The power to create and control wonders from nature. These and more reveals the glorious power of the almighty God.
The Scripture describes God as our
• Strength
• Rock
• Fortress
• Deliverer
• Shield
• Horn ( power) of salvation
• Stronghold
• Support
I see the glory of God like a massive weight that no one dares to carry. The creator of the universe is bigger that the universe. Merely trying to do so is endangering one’s life. What can be done is to lean on it for support; stand on it to avoid sinking, stem in it to avoid destruction of winds, hide in it for protection and safety. Any attempt to fight it is dangerous. The scripture states,
“It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Heb. 10:31).
Our God is a rock of offense; the scripture states,
“And whoever falls on this stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder” (Matt. 21:44)

The glory of God is about creation
From human knowledge and his discoveries and what can be seen from the sky to the bottom of the Ocean, we have to appreciate the beauty of God’s creations: Creation of the smallest flying Bee humming bird to the biggest Ostrich; from the Bumble bee bat to the Elephant; and from the smallest Anglerfish to the big Blue Whale.
To what can we compare God’s perfect designs which have been permanent from eternity to eternity? That is why they called Him the ancient of days; He is sovereign owner of all creations.
Even though the glory of God is seen all over His creation, it is more reflected and experienced by man; being created in His own image. The Scripture states that we are fearfully and wonderfully created (Ps. 139:14). What God endowed human being at the beginning is the same glory as that of God. Human being lost that glory in the Garden of Eden; but was restored back to him through Christ.

In a nut shell
The glory of God is His person, His power and the sum of the glories of His creations. Whatever may be the glory of any of His creation is just a fractional part of the glory of God.

Why do we need God’s glory?

The Bible states
“The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness,
The world and those who dwell therein” (Ps.24:1)
Furthermore, the Bible states,
“All flesh is as grass,
And all the glory of man[f] as the flower of the grass.
The grass withers,
And its flower falls away, ( 1Pet. 1;24)
The glory of God is from everlasting to everlasting; unlike the glory of man or manmade thing which fades and was no more: the glory of God does not fade. Since glory of God is all about God, His power and His creation, we need to acknowledge this glory as Omnipotent, Omniscient and Omnipresent. It means, in Him contains all man’s existence and reasoning – knowledge, understanding and wisdom.
The scripture states
“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing (John 15:5)
Therefore, if He is the source of all these glories which describes glories of His creations, we need His glory that it may shine in our lives.
The Bible states that
“For exaltation comes neither from the east
Nor from the west nor from the south” (Ps.75:6).
Moreover, the scripture states
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths” (Pro. 3:5-6).

Who can experience God’s glory?

Every creation of God can experience the glory of God. The glory of God is revealed in man, vegetation, mountain, animals, sea, sky, scientific discoveries and among many others. The only way we (referring to “who can?”) can experience it is to be where He is. Another way to say this is, one must abide in His presence to experience His glory. The scripture states
“Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord?
Or who may stand in His holy place?
4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol,
Nor sworn deceitfully.
5 He shall receive blessing from the Lord,
And righteousness from the God of his salvation (Ps 24:3-5).
The hill of the Lord and the holy place is the presence of the Lord, and the blessings and righteousness of God is the glory of God upon our lives. Now, the only way we can be in His presence and experience the glory is to have a clean hand and pure heart. To have a clean hand and a pure heart is embracing God’s character, His purity.
He alone deserves to be honored, worshipped, praised, and adorned; also on Him alone we must trust, rely, and depend upon. Not giving Him His due respect is we creating an idol of our own, self-will. Whatever we become can never be the result of our own effort, it is His grace that empowers us to achieve.

Let’s learn from biblical examples, those who have experienced His glory and what character traits we found in them to experience the glory of God..
1. Enoch – He walked with God (Gen. 5:24)
2. Noah – Righteous and blameless (Gen.6:9)
3. Abraham – He believed God (Gen. 15:6)
4. Moses – humility (Num. 12:3)
5. Job – blameless and upright – Integrity (Job 1:1)
6. David – A man after the heart of God; doing God’s will (Acts 13:22)
7. Hezekiah – had zeal for the house of the Lord (2Chro. 29:3)
8. Jehoshaphat – seeks God and walk in His commandment (2Chro. 17:3-4)
9. Daniel – avoided agents of defilement (Dan. 1:8)
10. Zachariah – faithfulness in service (Luke 1:8)
11. Cornelius – devout, fear God and prayerful (Acts 10:20
12. Men of God – obedience and faithfulness to God’s calling and work – Samuel, Elijah, Elisha, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Jesus’ Disciples, Paul etc.
13. Women of God – selfless service to humanity – Deborah, Ruth, Esther, Dorcas etc.
Before anyone can experience the glory of God, that person must be in the will of God – the presence of God, where His glory resides. No one can be in his presence without having a good relationship with Him. To be in good relationship with Him, there are some character traits that must be revealed in that person. Characters portrayed by the above biblical examples are worth emulating if we want to experience His glory.
The glory of God upon their lives and their names remain in the book of remembrance as we are reading about them today. Their achievements and characters are still relevant today and will continue through ages to come. Every one of us are a man/woman like one of these godly people, we have the grace and power to be like one of them. The Holy Spirit helps us to remain in His presence to experience His glory.

Where can we experience God’s glory?

Our God is the God of all creations; therefore, He is the God of the mountain, valley, plain, water etc. in as much as the earth is the Lord’s, His presence is all over His creations, therefore, we can experience Him everywhere. David described His presence in Ps. 139:7-12, and the book of Jeremiah 23:23-24 describes it this way,
“Am I a God near at hand,” says the Lord,
“And not a God afar off?
Can anyone hide himself in secret places,
So I shall not see him?” says the Lord;
“Do I not fill heaven and earth?” says the Lord.
In the Old Testament, the glory of God was revealed at different locations and in the life of a particular called person. But in this New Testament age, the glory of God is revealed through His Son Jesus Christ (2Cor.3:7-18). His life, teaching and wonders reveal His power over nature, man and all that was created. The Bible states,
“Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves (Jn.1410-11).
This is God’s glory manifesting through His Son. Therefore, whoever accepts Jesus Christ already is empowered to experience this glory. If you believe in Jesus Christ you will see the glory of God.

When and how can we experience God’s glory?

David built a good relationship with God and thus become the source of his strength; a relationship that produces positively in his life. What are the ways he built the relationship?
• He relied on God for guidance (2Sam. 2: 1; 5:19)
• His commitment to the course of God, e.g.
o his eagerness to build a temple for the Lord;
o the lavishing ceremony in bringing the Ark of the Lord to Jerusalem (2 Sam. 6:1-)
• he wrote numerous songs to praise God
• He maintained a position as a king who promotes the course of God’s kingdom above his earthly kingdom.
As a Christian, you must strive and commit your ways to the course of God. This is one of the secret of David’s success; you must allow God to reign supremely over your life, total submission under His rule.
Wherever you fall as a Christian, you must always pray for grace and empowerment to submit totally for God to reign over your life. In this way, He will make you to prosper in all your ways
Moses saw the glory of God
“Now therefore, I pray, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight. And consider that this nation is Your people.”
“And He said, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
And he said, “Please, show me Your glory.”
“Then He said, “I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” … So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by (Exo.
Godly attributes attract the presence of God and enables one to experience the glory of God. What follows the presence of God or proof of His presence was that Moses demanded to see the glory of God; the Lord granted him his request. He saw the Lord’s glory; how?
The Lord invited him to the mountain to experience His glory. On the mountain, the Lord immersed Moses in the cleft of the rock where Moses could see the goodness and glory of God. Without being hid in cleft of the rock he wouldn’t have been able to see that glory.
The mountain of God typified Christ. Jesus is the Rock; the Rock of refuge, Rock of salvation and our strength. We need to stand on this Rock; let us hide ourselves in the cleft of the Rock. It is in this Rock (Jesus Christ) that we can experience the glory of God

Steps to maintaining God’s glory

The scripture states,
“The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven (Hebrews 1:3).

How do we maintain this glory?
Total surrender of one’s life to God
We see in this quotation that it is the word of God that can help to maintain the glory of God. What did David do to keep this glory of God? In Psalm 18 verse 6, he purpose to
1. Love God
2. Trust Him
3. Call on Him
4. Praise Him
What David exhibits here is unconditional surrender of his life to God. No wonder, his dynasty was an everlasting one. If you want to maintain the glory of God for your life, be in the will of God. Something must be special in your life that you just have to give up as a mark of respect and commitment to the course of God

The need to fear God
Christians must submit totally to His will, by observing, respecting and doing all that is written in the word of God:
• obeying His commandments,
• departing from all forms of evil
• doing according to His will.
• walk in the spirit (walking in His ways) and
• allowing Him to dictate the path we should follow in life.

The need to pray
It is necessary to give time for prayer and fasting in order to combat seen and unseen forces that draw people away from the presence of God. Note that Jesus’ prayer life was a continuous one, not just a brief moment.
